Nice has retained many vestiges of its rich heritage in its museums. Together, Nice's museums they trace the city's past from prehistoric man, through to the Romans and the Middle Ages.
Particularly notable is the Museum of Human Palaeontology (Musée de Palaeontologie Humaine Terra Amata), the Nice Archaeological Museum (Musée d'Archéologie de Nice-Cimiez), and also the (Regional Museum of the Asian Arts (Musée Départemental des Arts Asiatiques). The main museums are given below.

This unusual museum houses a series of work by one man - the Russian-born artist, Marc Chagall. In all, 17 pieces make up Chagall's Biblical Message from the Old Testament, created between 1956 and 1966. Chagall lived in St. Paul-de-Vence, a small village near to Nice, from 1966 until his death in 1985.

Nice Museums: Musée de Palaeontologie Humaine Terra Amata (Museum of Human Palaeontology) - 25 Boulevard Carnot, Nice, France, FR

The Musée de Palaeontologie Humaine Terra Amata is built on an archaeological site discovered in Nice in the late 1950s. On permanent display in the museum are remains of the excavated site itself, together with finds which shed light on prehistoric life, from how earliest man lived, to the tools he worked with and the animals he hunted.

Nice's modern archaeological museum houses all the finds from past excavations of the city's 3rd-century Roman baths site. There are also various displays depicting Nice's history from Roman times, right through to the Middle Ages.

Nice's newest museum is dedicated to Asiatic culture, with exhibitions of objects both ancient and modern. Throughout the year, various events are held, including workshops and a tea ceremony. Of particular interest at the Musée Départemental des Arts Asiatiques is the Japanese-designed building itself, as well as the museum's beautiful setting within Nice's Phoenix Parc, with lovely views over the lake.
